Alberta Ballet presents Der Wolf & The Rite of Spring at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Friday, May 10th! With hard-hitting visceral music as an accent, this double bill takes audiences into a mysterious and sinister environment of folklore, forest, and madness. In this version of Nicolo Fonte’s The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky’s majestic score is accompanied with a libretto that delves into themes of birth, re-birth, and sacrifice, sprinkled with a subtle and symbolic touch. Der Wolf is a darker reimagination of the classic Little Red Riding Hood that the world is familiar with - the plot of this distorted fairy tale revolves around threat and temptation while the heroine is given three chances to turn her fate around. Follow the path through the woods to the greatest concert hall in all of Edmonton and witness not just one but two great performances back-to-back! Don't let the big bad wolf stop you from reserving your seats today!

On May 10th, 2024, Der Wolf & The Rite of Spring will play at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. This Canadian dual premiere will feature choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s new perspective on the controversial “The Right of Spring,” which still utilizes the original score by Igor Stravinsky. On the other hand, choreographer Morgan Runacre-Temple presents her interpretation of the moody rendition of Little Red Riding Hood by the Austrian opera house Oper Graz.

“This is a truly ambitious and daring program to close our ‘23-’24 season. Both choreographers are widely celebrated for their unique style and powerful storytelling. Their influence is essential to the continued evolution of our artistic identity, and I am overjoyed to share these works with you.”- Christopher Anderson, Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet

The Rite of Spring’s premiere more than a century ago shocked Paris audiences of the time. In comparison to practically every other piece of music or dance in history, it generated more controversy and exerted more power during the period of its release due to the themes presented.

A darker twist on the folk tale, Der Wolf also explores the struggle between devotion and dominance and depicts this through a young woman deliberating on a choice.

“The choreography is continually unexpected yet feels gut-punching inevitable… the women especially are tremendous in their discomfort: hands scratch at the skin, uneasy glances are exchanged, they hurtle through flurries of soil in panic,” The Guardian shares in a review of the former play.

These elegant performances are nothing without the technical team behind every sound, movement, and visual effect presented on-stage. Catch a glimpse of the star-studded creative team below:
