For two consecutive nights in Edmonton, the Alberta Ballet Welcomes the Beijing Dance Theatre in Hamlet! Watch the Shakespeare play reimagined from Friday, February 23rd to Saturday, February 24th, at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
Founded fifteen years ago, the Beijing Dance Theater is directed by artistic director and choreographer Wang Yuanyuan. As a pioneer in forging cultural alliances that showcase China's top stage performers, the group has solidified its dominance on China's dance stage with breathtaking and unparalleled dance works working with famous directors, composers, and visual artists.
Yuanyuan began the independent performing group in China but worked beyond the restrictions of a government-controlled professional dance scene. With this, the trained ballerina has been successful in garnering bookings worldwide, to which she explained with a Chinese proverb the motivation behind her goal: “Those who don’t know have no fear.”
The director is known for her collaboration on Feng Xiogang’s film, The Banquet, which is known for transposing to a Chinese dynasty the politico-personal challenges of Hamlet’s Danish monarchy. It is with this inspiration that the dance project came to this creation, her own rendition of Hamlet in dance.
“The company is almost unnervingly good at playing mannequins. Costume choices were masterful - strings dangling from suited wrists - in a sequence in which the company’s affect-less faces and limp arms describe a pantomime that suggests that Hamlet - or the universe - is toying. The theme of red ushered in with the Floral Spirit, gathers strength,” the Dallas Magazine shares in a recent performance by the Ballet Company.
These world-class dancers have expertly intertwined the complex story of love, retribution, and madness throughout each elegant performance. The ballet form's fluidity masterfully captures every emotion, from the famous soliloquies to the devastating confrontations in the play.
We’ve known this for a while now, but the Edmonton arts and entertainment scene never fails to impress! The Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium stage hosts only the most extraordinary plays backed up with masterful lighting and sound design that truly captures the essence of each production being presented at the iconic venue.
