Ballet Hispanico is calling you to watch the life of Eva Perón told through contemporary ballet at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Friday, September 22, 2023! Eva Perón, more commonly known as Evita, gained notoriety and won the hearts of the lower economic class in the 1940s due to her affiliation with Former Argentinian President Juan Perón. This newfound fame also meant several rumors surfaced about her scandalous past of sleeping with multiple men. Despite this, Evita leveraged her fame and power to fight for women’s right to vote. All of this has made her one of Argentina’s most controversial women, and her story has been brought to life in different modern productions, such as the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Evita” and our very own Ballet Hispanico: Doña Perón.
A brief glimpse into Eva Perón’s life is enough to warrant the status she has today. As she quickly rose to fame, she became the face of Argentina’s women’s rights movement in the 1940s when women were still not allowed to vote. And despite getting criticized for her shady past, she continued to fight for her advocacy until her untimely death in 1952.
Her life is interpreted through the choreography of award-winning choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and live music composed by Peter Salem to showcase the pivotal facets of her life, from growing up in an impoverished home to becoming Argentina’s First Lady. This production would also not be complete without the brilliant Latinx dancers from Ballet Hispanico who gives life to these performances. Ballet Hispanico is a renowned dance company and cultural organization that prides itself in representing the experiences of the Latinx and Hispanic community through dance since its foundation in 1970. The company aims to promote inclusive and judgement-free environments for creative expression for the Hispanic community while embracing its diversity.
