The tale of The Lion King starts in a fictional region of the African savanna; set in The Pride Lands, the young lion Simba is fated to take over after his father, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his intention to take the throne and become King himself. The first half's series of occurrences leads to the little lion's escape from his rightful place and the story of his eventual return to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.

The 1997 Broadway play, since its inception, had to develop extensive research on real African civilization and history given the play's setting. The story itself is actually based on previously existing African heroes and real happenings – Simba actually equates to the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female in the history of Broadway to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, specifically with costume design, which resulted in a precise staging of The Lion King. The costumes when seen are perfect representations of a few indigenous tribes in Africa, an example of such is Simba’s outfit in the show which as it happens inspired by Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the remarkable musical score penned by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African inspiration, with the musical even putting in numbers with lyrics that are sung either partly or entirely in African tongue such as Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African motif is also evident in choreography, with many of the numbers showing off the seamlessness of Bali-inspired dance.

The regalia, African influence, and superb acting all merge effortlessly to deliver an awe-inspiring musical.
