Disney’s The Lion King shares the struggles of the little lion cub Simba, who prematurely is forced to accept his destiny of succeeding as the King of the Pride Lands due to the tragedy that befalls his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a supported King by all of the Pride Lands, faces immense jealousy from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leads to his death. This forces Simba into into hiding for years on end, and where Simba's long journey and his eventual homecoming to his land and his seat on the throne.
Inspired by the previous 1994 film of the same name produced by Disney, The Lion King musical was beautifully adapted to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the unforgettable ensemble and creative team. Its premiere in 1997 was the first of its kind, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes The Lion King with very positive words in his posting, stating that “Julie Taymor's approach of this Broadway mainstay is a wonder, a successful adaptation unequaled in its cultural and historical foundation. Exceeding expectations as a film follow-up, the stage adaptation enhances on distinct creative choices of the previous 90s cartoon movie, from visual artistry and narrative to Lebo M's writing and the freshly African-inspired original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."
Disney's The Lion King was also met with the ultimate commendations from theatergoers. A specific review in particular makes mention of how this musical adaptation can appropriately be referred to as “The king of all shows”, expressing how he felt that “the show was fantastic. It was full of color and the score makes you feel all kinds of emotion. The costumes and masks really brought the roles to life.” Most audiences who have watched the shows over the previous 2 decades agree that despite being an adaptation of a motion picture, the iconic musical was a worthwhile show to watch.
The approaching July’s season of The Lion King will be hosted in Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at Alberta on Tuesday 22nd July 2025. Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, being just as profound and energetic as the musical with the theater's beautifully planned stage setup and seating arrangement is pointed to by theatergoers as the only option to stage this famous show.
