Fiddler On The Roof tells the story of Tevye, a hardworking milkman with five daughters. Reb Teyve and his family are Jewish, living in a small village called Anatevka in pre-revolutionary Russia. Having five daughters, Teyve is responsible for looking for five husbands for his grown children. The family follows the Jewish custom of engaging a matchmaker to find husbands for the young women. It is up to Tevye if he would approve of the potential husband or not. Local matchmaker, Yente, comes in to match the oldest daughter, Tzeitel, to a man her father approves. However, things become complicated because Tzeitel is actually in love with a poor tailor. With the first match not going well, will the other daughters cooperate, or will they also choose their fates? Meanwhile, the family’s troubles grow when the town czar requires the Jewish community to leave Anatevka.

“Miracle of miracles, indeed: Just when you think you know a classic musical backwards and forwards, along comes director Bartlett Sher to prove otherwise.” – NJ.com

As expected, a multi-award-winning musical was well-received by most critics. NBC New York’s Robert Kahn mentioned, “This new “Fiddler,” gorgeous and affecting, is a respectful staging of the Jerry Bock-Sheldon Harnick classic, with modernities here and there to keep us on our toes.” Meanwhile, NJ.com’s Christopher Kelly raved about Director Sher’s work, “Miracle of miracles, indeed: Just when you think you know a classic musical backwards and forwards, along comes director Bartlett Sher to prove otherwise.” Apart from the high-energy songs and choreography, Entertainment Weekly’s Jessica Derschowitz loved the mellow scenes, “There are moments of great levity in this production – songs about matchmakers and raising your glass for a toast, among all the classics the show is known for – but its quieter moments were even greater standouts.”

“By the finale, the production settles into the routine of rejection – of a daughter who weds outside the faith, of an entire community cast out for that very faith. And audiences will feel the customary tug of sentiment, caught up in the sweep of this family, this village, and this culture. As Tevye might ask, Do you love me? How can anyone resist?” – The Wrap.
