“Handsomely designed. The slick production packs plenty of tricky visuals including a giant squid and a spectral ensemble of Addams ancestors.” – New Jersey Newsroom.
“For a Broadway megamusical that celebrates antisocial behavior and schadenfreude, The Addams Family inspires mixed emotions. It’s a night of pleasant, clever songs and sly jokes, charming performances and swoony visuals.” – Time Out New York.
The Addams Family is based on the Charles Addams’ cartoon strip of the same name. The cartoon was first published in 1938 in the New Yorker. Since then, several adaptations in film, TV animated shows, comic books, and video games have been created. In 2009, the first ever musical adaptation of The Addams Family opened on Broadway. The show was initially directed by Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott with choreography by Sergio Trujillo. In 2011, The Addams Family embarked on a North American Tour and traveled to more than 16 major cities. One year later, the production went on an international tour in South America and Asia before returning to Chicago in 2015 with a brand new creative team. In 2017, the show went on tour in the U.K., opening at the famed Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
In 2010, The Addams Family earned numerous nominations and awards, including a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design, a Drama League Award for Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Set Design.
The musical also received generally positive reviews from critics. Siaska Hirst from Redbrick mentioned that the musical is “wickedly wonderful, delightfully dreadful and magically full of malice, mischief, and mayhem.” Meanwhile, John Simon from Bloomberg News loved the musical’s score, “Unlike, in most current musicals, the songs really shine: Melody, too, has risen from the dead.” The musical’s award-winning set design didn’t fail to impress some critics. In his review, Michael Sommers from New Jersey Newsroom pointed out The Addams Family’s impressive set, “Handsomely designed. The slick production packs plenty of tricky visuals, including a giant squid and a spectral ensemble of Addams ancestors.” Lastly, David Cote from Time Out New York has nothing but good words for the show, “The Addams Family inspires mixed emotions. It’s a night of pleasant, clever songs, sly jokes, charming performances, and swoony visuals.”
