Synopsis
The Lion King follows the adventures of Simba who is a young lion cub (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas), learning to overcome change and come to terms with his destiny as the king of the Pride Lands. In this timeless tale, Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons), makes a plan to steal Mufasa’s throne by leading father and son into a deadly stampede of wildebeests. Simba manages to escape, but Mufasa is killed. Simba then returns as a wise adult (voiced by Matthew Broderick) ready to reclaim his homeland from his wicked uncle with the aid of his loyal sidekicks Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (voiced by Ernie Sabella). Expect to sing the night away to all your favorite songs and listen to 6 incredible indigenous African languages which are sung and spoken throughout the show, including Swahili, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, and Congolese.

Winner of as many as six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Disney’s Lion King spectacle puts the spotlight on one of the most acclaimed creative teams in Broadway history. Helmed by the Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor, the popular story is reimagined using some of the theater’s most breathtaking stagecraft. The Lion King also features the world class work of Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan and a stunning score crafted by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Elton John and Tim Rice.
Cast for the North American Tour include Peter Hargrave as Scar. This first class talent has credits off-broadway and regionally with Cleveland Play House, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and Disney Cruise Line. Meanwhile, he’s lent his talents to the silver screen with “Law & Order: SVU,” “FBI,” “Godfather of Harlem,” “Dynasty” and “Madam Secretary.” Darnell Abraham will step into the shoes of Mufasa (Hamilton, George Washington, Color Purple revival). Meanwhile, Mukelisiwe Goba is Rafiki, Nick Cordileone is Timon, Nick LaMedica is Zazu, Danny Grumich is Pumbaa, Erick D. Patrick is Simba, Thembelihle Cele is Nala, Forest VanDyke is Banzai, and Martina Sykes is Shenzi. The creative team also includes an incredibly talented ensemble cast.
History and Awards
Produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures, The Lion King is a musical movie that captured the hearts of children and adults alike as soon as it was released in 1994. The movie was co-directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, produced by Don Hahn, written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. The Lion King’s original songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by composer Hans Zimmer.
With lovable characters, a talented voice cast and iconic soundtrack, the movie quickly became known as a cult classic. It was ranked as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. With an initial gross of more than $763 million, it was obvious that The Lion King was destined for greatness beyond the big screen. It wasn’t long until the animation was adapted into a Broadway hit musical. In 1997, Disney took the story to new heights and changed the history of musical theater as we know it.
The production was such a spectacle that it went on to become Broadway’s highest-grossing show of all time. The Lion King Musical won as many as six Tony Awards (1998), including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Costume Design, making the talented Julie Taymor the first woman in theater history to receive the esteemed honor.
